Velosco Energy Vacancy – Posted 28th November 2025
- Role Description & Purpose
Role: R&D Project Manager & Software Lead
Location: Edinburgh / Hybrid (CodeBase) • Start: Jan 2026
Velosco is running a feasibility and prototyping programme to build an AI-leveraged and optimisation-enabled SaaS platform for technical due diligence (TDD), optioneering and cost modelling of renewable energy projects. We need a PM with strong software coordination skills. The role suits an engineer/technical PM with interest in digital innovation, RAG workflows and offline LLM operations, with a critical eye for when to use LLMs—and when not to, as well as how best to leverage Velosco’s existing deterministic models which will remain an underpinning feature of the new initiative.
This role bridges project management, software leadership, and technical coordination, making it ideal for an engineer or technically skilled PM with sector knowledge and an interest in digital innovation in the renewable energy sector.
- Key Responsibilities
2.1 Project Leadership & Delivery
- Lead day-to-day delivery across feasibility and prototyping phases.
- Maintain and administer the project plan, Gantt chart, sprint backlog, Kanban board, risk register, and documentation suite
- Own the project plan, backlog, sprints, risks, milestones, and reporting.
- Run weekly Agile ceremonies and manage inputs to code review meetings.
- Track milestones and deliverables to ensure alignment with grant requirements and reporting obligations
- Report to the Project Director on a monthly basis and participate in scheduled steering committee meetings
2.2 Software & Technical Coordination
- Coordinate software design with ML & optimisation lead, engineers, domain experts, and academic partners.
- Define requirements for RAG-enabled prototypes, optimisation engine, UI/UX, and integrations with existing tools.
- Manage technical spikes and prototype issues; document code reviews and ensure solid Git/GitHub practice.
- Own the RAG pipeline: ingestion & chunking, offline embeddings, hybrid retrieval + reranking, context compression, prompt/citation standards.
- Specify KPIs/document extractors and validate against Velosco benchmarks and early adopter feedback
- Operate offline LLMs (model selection, context/tokens, latency/quality trade-offs).
2.3 Stakeholder Engagement
- Primary contact for grant funding body; maintaining compliance and good comms.
- Engage early adopters and specialists to identify and further refine use cases; produce clear updates and demos.
- Instrument early-adopter cohorts via Langfuse (or self-hosted): usage, latency, failure modes, prompt variants, backlog insights.
2.4 Risk, Governance & Reporting
- Maintain risk register; run monthly progress reviews and key milestone reports.
- Support IP strategy; ensure data governance, security, and confidentiality.
- Apply privacy controls (minimal logging/redaction, offline-first defaults).
2.5 Quality Assurance & Testing Oversight
- Coordinate unit/integration/regression/system tests.
- Run LLM sanity checks and validate against historic Velosco benchmarks and case studies.
- Introduce RAG evaluation and close the loop with feedback.
- Required Skills & Experience
Technical & Professional
- Degree in Engineering/Computer Science/Renewable Energy (or similar);
- 3–5 yrs PM experience in engineering/energy/software/R&D.
- Strong Agile delivery; comfortable coordinating multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent organisation, analysis, and documentation; domain interest in renewables (offshore wind a plus).
Desirable
- CAPM®/PM credential;
- Applied ML/optimisation/decision-support exposure.
- Experience with LLMs/RAG for engineering/contractual docs.
- R&D/grants experience; university collaboration.
- Offshore wind/TDD/cost modelling familiarity.
- Python and JS coding skills (hands-on coding not necessarily required though would be advantageous). Just as important is a desire to learn and leverage new techniques and vectors for programming code and ability to work meaningfully with software engineers.
- RAG skills: hybrid retrieval, embeddings, rerankers, context compression, prompt/citation hygiene.
- Observability & eval: Langfuse (traces/versions/metrics), feedback pipelines.
- Offline ops: llama.cpp/LM Studio/Ollama, quantised models, context window tuning, latency-quality trade-offs.
- Security: redaction in logs/telemetry; access control for sensitive docs; safe mobile/chat surfaces (e.g., Telegram) and built-in to SaaS agentic RAG interface
- Personal Qualities
- Highly organised; proactive, curious, and solution-oriented.
- Strong communicator across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ownership mindset; comfortable in fast-moving, innovation-led environments.
- What Velosco Offers
- Lead a flagship innovation at the intersection of offshore wind, optimisation, and AI.
- Work from CodeBase Edinburgh—a leading tech hub with events, mentors, and a vibrant startup community (excellent transport links).
- Significant growth potential into MVP/commercial phases (subject to funding and early-adopter uptake).
This is a unique opportunity to help define the future of digital decision-support tools in the renewable energy sector. You’ll steward an offline-first AI stack with measurable impact on developer workflows, due diligence speed, and decision quality.
